The course entitled “Emerging ‘moral’ technologies and the ethical-legal challenges of new subjectivities” (MoTecLS), co-financed by the European Union within the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Activities-Modules,
deals with the ethical-legal implications of new technological and scientific advances for the European legal system.
Scientific-technological advances have indeed forced legal experts to re-consider legal categories, institutions, and subjectivities. Legal implications of scientific-technological progress for the European legal system have been long ago recognised by the European institutions. The main aim of the course is to provide law students with knowledge and understanding of this progress in order to be able to contribute to implementing adequate legal tools fostering scientific-technological progresses, including fundamental rights’ protection. The course will investigate the ethical-legal implications of ‘moral’ technologies for enjoying fundamental rights as follows: ‘moral’ technologies, protection of human dignity, identity and the right to integrity; EU anti-discrimination law and human enhancement; the role of scientific and technological advances in re-designing legal subjectivities; the role of the existing committee on bioethics in promoting public awareness; the role of European and national law in providing a framework for scientific-technological progress to be ‘ethically designed by default’. The addressed topics range from robotics, artificial intelligence, human enhancement, and advances in genetics.
The teaching staff is composed of national and international experts of different disciplines. Their expertise will contribute to clarifying technical aspects essential to elaborate adequate forms of regulation. The course is primarily directed to Law students both Italian and foreigners. However, students from other disciplines like psychology, biotechnology, and medicine are welcome. They will have the possibility of discussing ethical-legal problems that may concern their future professional activities.
